Betty Bakes: Rocky Road

Ok, so the weather this weekend is really not ideal for baking in, but I really wanted to share this recipe for Rocky Road. I love Rocky Road and I made a big batch for my recent birthday and it went down rather well πŸ™‚ I really recommend keeping it in the fridge if you do have a go while it’s this hot though.

I hope you’re all enjoying the nice weather. I love the sunshine, but must admit, I’m melting a little in the heat!

Love,

PS. Let me know if it’s too hard to read. I wasn’t sure about white, but couldn’t pick another colour either :/

My Products of the Week

Ok, so my title is a little tongue in cheek.

For those of you who have managed to miss my moaning on Twitter and Facebook, I have been really ill for the best part of the last two weeks. Some sort of nasty virus that has given me a sore throat to the point of losing my voice for several days, headaches, muscle aches, a blocked nose and sinus pain as well as almost complete lack of energy and inability to concentrate.

Yeah, it’s been loads of fun.

I’ve been slowly increasing my overall medication intake as time has gone on. It started as just paracetamol and Stepsils, moving on to cold & flu tablets, Berocca, cold & flu drinks as well as copious amounts of Lucozade.
Not much point reviewing them. Paracetamol was probably the most effective, and I’m still super impressed that I got 32 tablets for 38p. Beechams Cold & Flu Hot Blackcurrant is horrible, I never once managed to finish a cup.

I thought I was starting to feel a little better yesterday, but I’ve taken a downward turn again today. I really hope I’m better soon. I’m so bored of being ill, let alone all the time I’ve wasted not being able to write for work, for here or do anything fun. I even had to miss out on a trip to the V&A museum yesterday, that I was really looking forward to 😦

Hope you’re all doing better than I am πŸ™‚ Hopefully a more normal service will be resumed soon.

Birthday Presents

I have been a very spoilt girl this birthday.

I thought I would share some pictures of my massive haul with you.

I love everything I was given, but some items really stand out.

1920’s Flapper style dress and Red corsage from Pete
Sleeveless Skull print blouse from my sister
Full set of TURF comics by Jonathan Ross from Pete
Dracula graphic novel
Inside Dracula graphic novel
Absolutely beautiful Complete Fiction of H.P. Lovecraft, complete with silver edged pages
Leopard Owl Earrings
Some of my cards
I think this selection of presents may have exposed my geek side to you all. I am a big comic fan, and love pretty much anything to do with vampires (with the massive exception of Twilight).Β
There was also a good amount of leopard print in there, with a leopard print scarf from Pete’s parents and a leopard print belt and the leopard owl earrings from Pete’s sister Jo.
I also got some money from my grandparents that I am in the process of spending – three pairs of shoes so far!!
Thank you to everyone for all the gifts, it really was all too much. Also, thank you for laying off on the chocolate πŸ™‚
Love,

My 27th Birthday

Last Monday was my 27th birthday πŸ™‚
Whilst I lost a notable amount of work time in the preparation and celebrations, I had a lovely birthday weekend with a lot of my favourite people and far too much food (but really, really good food)!

I had a small party and barbecue on the Saturday. The weather wasn’t quite as nice as it had been during the week and it looked ominously cloudy from time to time, but it never did actually rain.Β We hung out in my garden with cake, drinks, meat and music for most of the afternoon and into the evening.

I wore my lovely Dorothy Perkins peach/coral polka dot peplum dress, which I’d been waiting for a suitable occasion to wear for ages! To match the vintage styling of the dress I put my hair up in victory rolls. I think they may be my best victory rolls so far πŸ™‚

Making a Wish

On my actual birthday, my boyfriend, our dog and I took a day trip to Burley in the New Forest.
We had a lovely lunch in The Queen’s Head pub (dog friendly) before wandering through the village to see the shops. As well as being a typical New Forest village full of ponies and shops selling fudge and ice cream, Burley also plays on its historical links to dragons and witches and has a large number of shops selling associated souvenirs.
The village is actually quite small, so we extended our walk into the surrounding forest and countryside, taking in an old hill fort and barrows. Alf had a fantastic time tearing around, up and down hills and through fields of bracken. He was well and truly knackered by the time we got back to the village. Pete also made the most of being outdoors (his natural habitat) by climbing trees.
We must have walked for about two hours and were in desperate need of drinks when we got back to Burley. As we enjoyed The Queen’s Head so much at lunch, we headed back for refreshments and I got myself a cream tea – which was sooooo yummy.

The Queen’s Head, Burley. Dog Friendly. Awesome Cream Tea.
The cutlery and condiments came in a small picnic basket. So cute.
Alf loves being outside and ran around like a crazy thing
Woo, Bracken!

I had such a lovely time. Thank you to everyone who came to the party and all of you who sent birthday wished via text, facebook or twitter. You’ve made being old a lot easier for me.

Now I need to seriously up my exercise routine to loose these extra pounds I’ve put on this week!

John Frieda Full Repair presents Summer Hair Tutorials

I’m sure most of us will have heard of John Frieda’s Full Repair range by now, particularly if you style, colour and generally torture your hair as much as I do!

Unfortunately for me, the range launched while I was going through a particularly tight period financially, so it took me a while to jump on the bandwagon. I have used John Frieda products for years, from when I first discovered Frizz-Ease serum when I was about 15 to the Sheer Blonde Tone Correcting range in my latest blonde incarnation.

As well as a great range of products, John Frieda also have a YouTube channel, where they have videos showing you how to achieve different styles using John Frieda products. Some of the recent additions to the channel show you how to do a perfect straight blow-dry and a full body blow-dry as well as how to style a top-knot and a 60’s beehive, all using the Full Repair products.

I love the look of the beehive, but unfortunately I haven’t quite got enough hair to pull it off yet. I have had a go at the perfect straight blow-dry and I’m starting to get the hang of it, blow-dry styling has never been my forte :/

The videos make the styles all look really simple and achievable. I like the fact that they get the models to do bits of the work, to give a better idea of how to create the styles yourself.

Full Repair Products

I’m always keen to try out new hair treatments, as regular bleaching, straightening and other styling mean that my hair is frequently dry, fuzzy and often has split ends. So the Full Repair range was a bit of a no-brainer for me.

John Frieda Full Repair Range

I’ve now had chance to try out most of the range, with the exception of the Root Lift Foam and Perfect Ends Mist. My two favourite products from the selection are definitely the Deep Conditioner and Styling Spray. The Perfect Ends Deep Infusion is good, but I generally find I need something more intensive for my dry ends (I’m loving Macadamia Oil at the moment).Β The shampoo and conditioner are also good products and definitely improve the look and feel of my hair. I tend to alternate between the Deep Conditioner and standard Conditioner to get the most benefit without overusing the Deep Conditioner.

Overall I really like the range and would recommend it. The products work well, although in some instances I feel I need a little more treatment due to the extreme condition of my hair. Although I couldn’t afford it at first, the products are actually quite reasonably priced and give value for money (I was just really, really poor earlier this year!).

Let me know if you have a go with any of the videos. There’s a new tutorial for a hair bow that I’ve just seen and would love to try, need to will my hair to grow faster!!

NB. The Full Body Shampoo and Conditioner were sent to me as promotional items, but I have bought the rest of the range myself
